I’m Kevin Horton and I am the Director of the Chancel and Handbell Choirs at Trinity. I have been attending Trinity since 2023 and joined the chancel and handbell choirs in 2024, along with my husband of 20 years, Michael. I was blessed to grow up in a family that allowed me to pursue my love of music and singing. I grew up with passionate church musicians who encouraged everyone to join in at whatever level they felt able to. Between community choruses, church youth choir and attending the Cobb County Center for Excellence in the Performing Arts as a vocal major in high school, I was surrounded by opportunities to share and learn about sacred and secular music from a performance and directorial stand point. I graduated from IU-Southeast with a vocal music performance degree in 2005 and have sung with over a dozen different choirs across the country. I believe music is a profound means for worship, and it is one of the unique ways in which every member of the congregation can engage in worship on Sunday mornings. Psalm 100 calls on us to “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands.” The Psalmist calls on us to make a joyful noise. He doesn’t mention all of the things we place importance on with music, such as pitch, tone or rhythm. As my mother always said, the verse says joyful, not beautiful. For when we worship with joy, the Lord sees the beauty of that worship, even if we can’t. That is what drives me to lead the Chancel and Handbell Choirs, and I hope that encourages you to join in with whatever joyful noise you can muster in worship of God.
