Peter was the central figure; his preaching and leadership were the rocks that formed the foundation of the movement of the Holy Spirit in the forming of the theology and daily practice of the Christian faith in the early months and years of the Christian Church.
The early church looked to Peter to keep them on track with the teachings of Jesus; he was the voice of the faith in Jerusalem at Pentecost. Followers came to Peter for clarification of doctrine, guidance in worship and fellowship.
The Gospel’s narrative of the life and teaching of Jesus is based on the teachings of Peter and the other apostles as they related the events of the three years they spent with Jesus.
What was Peter like? What did he teach about Jesus and being a follower of Jesus? These questions will form the background of our study of 1 Peter.
