The Adult Literacy Program at Trinity has been in operation since October 2010. The mission of this program is to assist adults with literacy and numeracy issues as they (1) prepare to enter GED programs, (2) work to enhance their skills so thay can function more effectively in society, or (3) to address specific needs such as getting a driver’s license. The program operates on Mondays with sessions at 4:00 and at 7:00 p.m.
Clients come from a wide variety of backgrounds and are either self-referred or referred by social agencies such as group homes or Work One. Clients receive, free of charge, 45 minutes to an hour, once a week, of one-on-one tutoring tailored to meet their individual needs using items selected by their tutor from our resource room full of materials. The tutors are all volunteers who have been trained in the methods and materials appropriate to assist adults with literacy issues. Many tutors have teaching backgrounds, but several do not. Trinity members and others interested in becoming tutors should call the church (812-944-2229) and so indicate. The first time they come they will be asked to observe one or more tutoring sessions to confirm their interest.
Currently the program operates on Mondays in the newer education wing and in Murr Hall. First time clients are asked to call the church at 812-944-2229 to let program staff know they are coming on a given Monday, and then to arrive 15 minutes before the session begins so they may be registered and so we can begin to assess their specific needs.
